The Dana 60 front high pinion, reverse rotation axle with 4.56 and up carrier and 35 spline axle shafts is an extremly tough and highly desireable front axle. It has been made in numberous configurations, all used by Ford going back to 1978. A "Super 60" version was introdcuded in 2002 and features larger 10" ring and pinion gears and 33 spline stub shafts. The parts listed on this page have been verified to fit these axle configurations.

Axle Variations
  • Dana 60 (Snowfighter) with King Pin Knuckles and 9.75" Gears
  • Dana 60 (Non-Super) with Balljoint Knuckles and 9.75" Gears
  • Dana Super 60 with Balljoint Knuckles, 10" Gears and 1480 U-Joints
  • Dana Super 60 with Balljoint Knuckles, 10" Gears and 1550 U-Joints

Is your Axle a Standard Dana 60 or a Dana Super 60?

This axle configuration was offered in "Super" and "Standard" versions, both of which require different internal components so you will need to deterime which version your axle has. Find your axle BOM in the table under the "Dana 60 BOM Check" menu on this page for details and confirm the specs with the notes below.

  • If the stub shafts have 35 splines it is a Dana Super 60 axle.
  • If the stub shafts have 30 splines it is a standard Dana 60 axle.
  • If the axle came from a 2001 or older vehicle, it is a standard Dana 60 axle.
  • If the axle has king pin style knuckles, it is a standard Dana 60 axle.

Ring and Pinion Gears

If you are changing tire size or want to improve the mileage or towing capability of your vehicle, then you'll want to change your axle's gear ratio. For help choosing the correct ratio, see the Crawlpedia Gear Ratio Guide.

Ring and Pinion Gears *Lower gears are available for 4.10 and down differentials.
*4.56 thick gears are available for the 4.10 and down carrier.

Note: The Dana 60 axle has a 4.10/4.56 carrier break. To run 4.30/4.56* and lower gears, you will need a 4.10 and down differential carrier. To learn more about carrier breaks, see Thick Gears and Carrier Breaks.

To change to a 4.10 and down differential and run 4.30 and lower gears, you will need:

Differentials and Lockers

The best thing you can do to improve the traction of your vehicle is to install a differential locker or limited slip differential. For more information on each type of differential, click on the links below.

Differential Lockers

These differentials will work with the original gears in your axle as well as any of the gears listed in the section above. If you are changing your gear ratio, please see the gear section above first.

Locking Hubs and Drive Flanges

Upgrade to heavy duty aftermarket locking hubs or convert to drive flanges for the ultimate in strength and reliability. A free-spin conversion kit is also available to reduce rolling resistance and increase fuel economy.

Locking Hubs and Flanges

Note: Standard front 35 spline Dana 60 axles feature 30 spline stub shafts, however, 35 spline stub shafts are a very common upgrade.

Steering Knuckles

Stock Dana 60 knuckles are plenty strong for most application, however, if you are running tires over 40" tall with hydraulic steering, or if you simply run your vehicle extra hard, you will want forged steering knuckles.
