If this is not your axle, click here
The Dana 60 front high pinion, reverse rotation axle with 4.56 and up carrier and 35 spline axle shafts is an extremely tough and highly desirable front axle. It has been made in numerous configurations, all used by Ford going back to 1978. A "Super 60" version was introduced in 2002 and features larger 10" ring and pinion gears and 33 spline stub shafts. The parts listed on this page have been verified to fit these axle configurations.
Axle Variations
- Dana 60 (Snowfighter) with King Pin Knuckles and 9.75" Gears
- Dana 60 (Non-Super) with Balljoint Knuckles and 9.75" Gears
- Dana Super 60 with Balljoint Knuckles, 10" Gears and 1480 U-Joints
- Dana Super 60 with Balljoint Knuckles, 10" Gears and 1550 U-Joints
Is your Axle a Standard Dana 60 or a Dana Super 60?
This axle configuration was offered in "Super" and "Standard" versions, both of which require different internal components so you will need to determine which version your axle has. Find your axle BOM in the table under the "Dana 60 BOM Check" menu on this page for details and confirm the specs with the notes below.
- If the stub shafts have 35 splines it is a Dana Super 60 axle.
- If the stub shafts have 30 splines it is a standard Dana 60 axle.
- If the axle came from a 2001 or older vehicle, it is a standard Dana 60 axle.
- If the axle has king pin style knuckles, it is a standard Dana 60 axle.
Minor and Master Overhaul Kits
When servicing an axle or installing new gears or a new differential, it is a good idea to replace the internal seals, bearings, and any parts that get damaged during disassembly. These minor and master install kits include all of the high quality parts you need.

Ring and Pinion Gears
If you are changing tire size or want to improve the mileage or towing capability of your vehicle, then you'll want to change your axle's gear ratio. For help choosing the correct ratio, see the
Crawlpedia Gear Ratio Guide.

*Lower gears are available for 4.10 and down differentials.
*4.56 thick gears are available for the 4.10 and down carrier.
|
Note: The Dana 60 axle has a 4.10/4.56 carrier break. To run 4.30/4.56* and lower gears, you will need a 4.10 and down differential carrier. To learn more about carrier breaks, see
Thick Gears and Carrier Breaks.
To change to a 4.10 and down differential and run 4.30 and lower gears, you will need:

Differentials and Lockers
The best thing you can do to improve the traction of your vehicle is to install a differential locker or limited slip differential. For more information on each type of differential, click on the links below.
These differentials will work with the original gears in your axle as well as any of the gears listed in the section above. If you are changing your gear ratio, please see the gear section above first.

Axle Shafts
Replace your broken or worn out axle shafts with stock replacements or upgrade to high performance chrome-moly axle shafts to handle more power and larger tires.
Note: Dana 60 axles use various length axle shafts. You will need to either measure your existing shafts to order the proper length or order a set that can be cut to size. Quadrasteer axles are not supported at this time.

Locking Hubs and Drive Flanges
Upgrade to heavy duty aftermarket locking hubs or convert to drive flanges for the ultimate in strength and reliability. A free-spin conversion kit is also available to reduce rolling resistance and increase fuel economy.
Note: Standard front 35 spline Dana 60 axles feature 30 spline stub shafts, however, 35 spline stub shafts are a very common upgrade.

Steering Knuckles
Stock Dana 60 knuckles are plenty strong for most application, however, if you are running tires over 40" tall with hydraulic steering, or if you simply run your vehicle extra hard, you will want forged steering knuckles.

Spindles
If your spindles have been damaged or scarred by worn out bearings, it's time to upgrade to a set of heavy duty, heat treated, aftermarket spindles that are stronger and will last longer.

High Steer / Crossover Arms
Move your drag link, and tie rod up and out of the way while also making your steering knuckles stronger with a set of high steer arms. This upgrade is highly recommend for vehicles with large leaf spring lifts and those running hydraulic steering.

Hydro Assist / Full Hydro Steering
Oversize tires take significantly more force to steer which can make steering a chore and may even cause your stock steering box to fail. Upgrade your steering system with a hydraulic assist cylinder or convert to full hydraulic steering with these kits.

Axle Trusses
Beef up your Dana 60 axle housing with a precision cut and bent axle truss to handle larger tires and severe off-road abuse without flexing, bending, or breaking your axle.

Tabs and Brackets
Converting to a 4-link suspension requires new shock mounts, link mounts, gussets, and tabs. Save yourself time, money and frustration with high quality, pre-fabricated, precision fit brackets.

Differential Covers and Guards
Protect your differential with a heavy duty differential cover or bring down your differential temperatures with a high capacity finned cover for maximum heat dissipation.

Differential Cover Gaskets
Red High-Temp RTV Silicone (available at your local auto parts store) is the most common way to seal the differential cover on a Dana 60 axle, however, several aftermarket manufacturers now offer reusable gaskets that are much cleaner.

Gear Oil
Dana Spicer recommends 80w90 Mineral oil or 75W140 synthetic oil, however, we recommend 75w90 full-synthetic gear oil for all Dana 60 applications (plus a traction modifier for differentials that require it).

Pinion Yokes
It is not common to need to replace a pinion yoke but in high horsepower applications, or if your driveshaft has been upgraded to larger u-joints, you may need to purchase a stronger and/or larger yoke.
